ETHICAL PERSPECTIVES AND THE USE OF AI IN WRITING POETRY

COMPILED BY :
DR MOLLY JOSEPH

These days, we are exposed to a scenario where we find it difficult to make out true , original poetry from the simulated ones from AL. Are we selling out our sterling creative potential to bargain for valorisation and prominence hyped up by the media? What drives poets these days to write ? Can AI and Chat GPT and the like take precedence over our God given , inspired neurons of the creative human brain ? What are the Ethical issues that arise?
Here comes the responses from the poets and thinking souls of IAE and those from out side. Please feel free to respond.

To err is human
But if there is no error,
It is a cause for concern

Artificial Intelligence ,Good or Bad?

Without ethical culture there is no salvation for humanity, wrote Albert Einstein. Now we live in an era of AI, an out grow or the youngest child of Digital Galaxy..Does AI even know what Ethics or Ethical culture is?

Chomsky is trying to answer this question , quotes Borges who wrote that if you live in a time of great change , you experience both comedy and tragedy, and experience” revelation” in understanding yourself and the world.
As with transition from Guttenbergto Digital Galaxy , I have tried to show that we experience both negative and positive aspects of big change.Positive because AI is used as means to solve many problems, negative because we feel that AI can degrade our creativity and debase our Ethics by using technology as a source of our knowledge and language. But so far all the Snapchats available today( Chat GPT, Bard, or Sydney) are more into quantity than quality contents.. Thus Chomsky concludes” as we know from the Science of Linguistics, and the Philosophy of knowledge, they differ profoundly from how human reason can use language.”
Inshort , all these AI Chats cannot match human mind or human creativity.because we rhyme and reason in a different way. We are, at our best, inherently ethical and original, often totally unpredictable in creating ideas, philosophy, literature and arts that become once again saviors of human, ,of Ethics and thus humanity.

These are days of hijacking …
poetry that springs
out of genuine feelings and thoughts as a streamlet, like a babbling brook, is being straightjacketed
in to the stiffened frames of rhythm and metre as posited by Al. It is as cruel an act as cutting off the feelers of the crab to fit it into a box.
Sad enough many a poem these days appear camouflaged as original, just seeking GPT standards.
As right minded people who believe in the Ethics of Things all around, we all should be on the guard and should not fall into such lures. Leave the poet to his naive expressions with slight errors, typos..but he/ she, is genuine and his/ her heart throbs through the lines

The human embryo, the human brain, the transcendental intricacies of a Human Being is non- translatable by science…. The Supernal Flow of the Creator is in the Creativity of Poetry and Art, which is born from the non- definable/ ineffable interstices of Human Spirit and Feeling, which No AI can recreate. Even an IVF cannot happen without the Creator – blessed ovum and semen…..
So also the Divine Nuances of Poetry are beyond the grasp of AI or Science…..Poetry is as intangible as the Human Soul, which determines life and death…..So also the fine, intangible twists, turns and nuances of language.
We are human being, the best of all creatures that have ever been in existence. We are subjected to forgetfulness, mistakes and imperfections. There’s no perfect Poet or Author on the earth, only great poets or exceptional Authors exist.
In my opinion, The value of poetry, in its purest form, lies in the intimate connection between the poet’s soul and the reader’s heart. A poet creates his or her feelings based on experiences – in a manner that will resonate with the readers. Poems should be that, which come from the soul and the muse. When poetry is solely produced by AI, devoid of human sentiment and lived experiences, it loses an integral part of its soul. When poets, especially contemporary poets, rely on AI to generate their work, they risk diluting the individuality and originality that have defined great poets throughout history.

The world of AI has the wherewithal to destroy the pure fabric of Spontaneity and Creativity in Literature/ Poetry…..just as Robots and Clones can eradicate the flesh and blood Living and Pulsating Truth of Humanity……both nefarious and grossly unethical….. As a Poet I really feel scared and endangered.. !!!!!!

Theories of poetry in decadence….
Spontaneous overflow of emotions…. recollection in tranquility makes no sense… creativity , impulses, feelings etc no meaning…. we will live among dead , a world of robots… I know some people who have been using … especially some younger scholars… its a matter of great concern… this needs to be addressed

Dr Shalini Yadav

AI generated Poetry has a fixed mechanism to create, with fixed vocabulary and style. It can be identified very easily. It may be good for novice ones but again It makes habitual n they won’t come out of that comfort zone to use wit and feelings in writing

Raj Babu Gandham

Without spontaneity what’s poetry ?
If a machine can write, it writes only words . A poet’s words are pregnant with his emotions. Might be tears, laughters and love.
I do not subscribe to such activities of any poet or writer, be it upcoming poet or a veteran.

Vinod Khanna

Real and artificial diamonds look alike. Only an experienced gemmologist can distinguish between the two. Firstly, any poet worth his salt would not do such a foolish act. Even the courts look into the background of an offender while pronouncing a judgement.Secondly, the soul is missing in an artificially produced work of art. Thirdly, the fear of being found out will not allow a true poet to commit such a suicidal act. Machines may produce an artificial blade of grass, but it takes a Walt Whitman to produce real ‘Leaves of grass’.

Prof Ashok Kapoor

Poetry generated by Chat GPT lacks spontaneity and originality. Chat GPT may have the technical skill , aided by AI , to plagiarise and regurgitate the given poetic content . Such an artificial poetic content is injurious to aesthetic sensibility, emotional equilibrium, effacing the cathartic relief that the Muse bestows upon genuine , talented poets .

Poetry is a spontaneous overflow of emotions , recollected in tranquillity , as pointed out by William Wordsworth in his ‘ Preface to the Lyrical Ballads ‘ .ST Coleridge, who collaborated with W. Wordsworth , in heralding Romantic Movement in England in 1798 , points out that poetry is essentially based upon creative imagination .

John Keats articulates his response in one of his letters , saying that he hates poetry that has a palpable design .Poetry, he avers , should come as leaves come to a tree , otherwise , it should not come. He coined the concept of ‘ Negative Capability , under the influence of W..Shakespeare’s dramatic art , dovetailed with poetic felicity, positing that an artist must plunge in uncertainties, mysteries and doubts without any irritable reaching after fact and reason ..

How can Chat GPT be original and spontaneous?

Thus , AI can never dream of replacing poets and creative writers who basically thrive upon the elan vital of rich aesthetic sensibility.
Poetry blooms and blossoms like flowers and plants in the vast ambience of Nature , exploring new dimensions and avenues.of life .Poetry provides emotional and spiritual equipoise , embalming lacerated human hearts and anguished souls .
How can Chat GOT don the mantle of poets who are actually visionaries and
prophets ?

Dr. Tejaswini Patil

We need poetry with original ideas , images and appeal to the human mind..Sometimes, it seems that we should have grammatical errors in our chats to prove genuinity.

              Life!

O’ what’s the use of this modern life
with its stressful twentyfour seven and endless strife !

Pockets hefty with bucks,
but back, creaking,
breaking under the burden
of apple laptops !

Wasn’t everything better
with the older dispensation
with its community lunch
at work place, frolics and fun;
job , an easy sail through
with little tension !

Off-time, spent
at fishing in ponds ,
picnicing in woods
with paltry funds !

Without any need to carry
gadgets along with
for leftover work,
loitering like buffoons
in open corridors of free life
enjoying ethnic songs
sung by friends in groups !

Look what high-tech culture
has now done to our life,
we have forgotten how to live
for a few more bucks in our phony strife !
