FREE SUMMER ART CAMP TURNS UNTO A WORKSHOP IN ETHICS

OPERATION E FOR ETHICS IN PROGRESS

Mr Inderjit Singh HES-II from India (Punjab – Bathinda) – a Life Member of the International Academy Of Ethics, interacts with the young champions on Ethics.

A Summer Art Camp by Sardar Sobha Singh Memorial Chittarkar Society (Regd.) ,Bathinda (Punjab) at Teacher’s Home near Fauji chowk, Bathinda, became a virtual workshop in Ethics.
More than 220 students of various age groups from various schools colleges and Kinder Gartens participated with zeal and zest.

Believing in the dictum, ‘catch them young’ the orator spoke about the value of ethics in this tech savy era, when the youngsters are turning into mere machines, and screen addicted!
He addressed the mammoth gathering about human values and duties not only towards his fellow humans but also towards all the co-existence in the form of all flora and fauna!
Man is ,no doubt, considered the best creation of god on this planet but only then if he is imbued with Ethics ie the sense of good and bad and to do right things at right time in right way.

Man being the senior among all the creation, ought to prove his seniority and benignity by keeping a soft corner to preserve and conserve the nature – his own worldly abode. He should be very very sincere in consuming natural resources and framing policies which add to sustainable development.

He also told about the ideals of the IAE as well as its world wide objectives for a better world based on love, compassion and mutual understanding.

PANEL DISCUSSION ON THE AGE OF MORAL ARIDITY AND INSENSITIVITY

International Academy of Ethics organized its 2nd Panel Discussion on the theme of Moral Aridity and Insensitivity on 23rd July, 2023.
The Panelists were Professor Shandar Ahmad [JNU, New Delhi], Dr. Laksmisree Banerjee former VC Kalhan Univ. India, and Dr. Gianluigi Segalerba from Italy. The event was moderated by Dr. Shobha Sharma , Assoc. Prof. [Sikkim].

Dr. Maja Herman Sekulic Vice-President’s message was played in the beginning of the session, elaborating the efforts of the IAE to create a world of ethical well-being.

Opening the discussions, Prof. Shandar Ahmed brought to light the fact that on a larger perspective, the onset of the digital age had seen the growth of human sensitivity. He talked of group fitness for collective survival of the human race. In families too, there are vulnerable sections, like kids, women and old parents, who need a higher sense of sensitivity from man. But there are problems because man has not yet been able to assimilate the new digital civilization, as there was a gap between what the individual wants and what the collective good requires.

Dr. Laksmisree Banerjee, remarked that the present civilization is marked by fear, which does not let men keep their heads high. Time and again, she referred to Tagore’s famous poem ‘Where the Head is Held High” and also lamented the “desert sands’ of dead habit, that have come to dominate the present narrative. Her discourse went back to the Mahabharta, and the arrival of the Lord on the scene when obscenities overgrow on the land of ‘dharma’. Dr. Gianluigi Segalerba, philosophizing on the present scenario, presented the thesis that too much emphasis on technology in education had sent poetry, history, study of nature, philosophy, creativity on exile, and what we have in the absence of these humanizing disciplines is a world of moral aridity. He also talked of intellectual aridity and wanted that intellectuals can re-set the things if they understand the dynamics of the upcoming age of insensitivity.

Dr. Jernail S Aanand , President of the IAE, in his concluding remarks asserted that we have to guard against the horrors of the digital age, in the form of AI, which can retard us mentally, physically and turn us into moral wrecks. He lamented that humanity today is electronically connected, yet physically isolated, suffers from emotional starvation, which affects their mental balance He expressed the fear that we are entering the neo-stone age of emotional inertia and spiritual coma, followed by clinical death.

The event was witnessed on livestream.by hundreds of our friends. Some of them like Dr Lalit Mohan Sharma Tariq Muhammad Rawle Iam James Dr Tamali Neogi Dr Mirzana Pašić Kodrić (Sarajevo) Eva Lianou Petropoulou and several others came up with insightful questions and suggestions as well.

The event evoked a lot of interest and gave rise to questions. This is the purpose of the IAE, Dr Anand quipped.

The event was rounded off by Dr. Molly Joseph , Chief Coordinator, who dwelt on the falling graph of sensitivity, with her vote of thanks. The event was hosted by Prof. Randhir Gautam , Coordinator.

CRITICAL AWARENESS ESSENTIAL TO CHECK VIOLENCE IN FILMS AND MEDIA

PANEL DISCUSSION ON 9TH JULY 2023

The International Academy of Ethics organized a Panel Discussion on 9th July, moderated by Professor Parneet Jaggi. The PD was chaired by President of the IAE Dr Jernail Singh Anand.

Panelists were Prof Dijana Milosevic, a theatre personality and a Fulbright Scholar from Serbia, Professor Prasenjit Biswas from Central Univ of Shillong, and Dr Tayron Achury from Colombia, South America.

In his introductory address, Dr Anand questioned the crass violence in films which is dished out in the name of entertainment. He also questioned the role of the media for it’s soft corner for bloody news and ignoring finer aspects of life. He pointed out that when films and media try to deviate from the narrative, they are causing intellectual violence. And when they are trying to change the taste of the people and offer them sugary material, it is Psychological Violence. Dr Maja Herman Sekulic Vice-President, IAE, also pointed to the impending danger of promotion of violence by films and the media.

Dr Dijana Milosevic insisted that theatre offers transformational experience because it is a part of art and culture, and does not cater to entertainment alone. She wanted that cine lovers should be able to distinguish between films which promote art and culture and those which are for pure entertainment and full of mindless violence. She pointed out that young minds are exposed to violence through video films which needs to be checked by collective action by all intellectuals, parents, social scientists and student bodies and teachers.

Dr Prasenjit Biswas was critical of the organized efforts to decenter the social narrative and reduce everything to images. He insisted that we have to regain our humanity by recentering the narrative in this war-shop of images where man has been relegated to nothingness, reduced to desire and impelled by TV ads to fulfill these desires. He called it self-emptying which was a sort of death wish.

Dr Tayron Achury, a political scientist, wanted critical and collaborative action against mindless entertainment so that youth and young kids could be saved from its evil effects.

Dr Parneet Jaggi, putting up a brilliant performance as a moderator brought down the panel discussion to one question: was it possible to check the rising violent trends, and how. She was able to bring the three panelists to the point that the issue is urgent, and it needs coordinated action at all levels of awareness. She assured that it was possible to effect a change in our perceptions if an awakened and alert populace decides what their kids will watch on TV.

Dr Anand while summing up the discussion said that all is not lost. He agreed with Dr Prasenjit Biswas that the film and media have made us passive consumers and objects of their commercial and targetted campaigns. We have to regain the position of the subject. Recenter the entire narrative and ignore the films made only for entertainment which carry no social responsibility.

Prof Jaggi proposed vote of thanks for the Panel, Dr Molly Joseph, Chief Coordinator as well as for Prof Randhir Gautam and Dr Mukesh Grover who were working behind the camera. The programme was watched by hundreds of active participants and members of the IAE on fb who were also thanked for their timely comments.

DR MAJA HERMAN SEKULIC ON NATIONAL TV

Dr. Maja Herman Sekulić, vice president of the new international Academy of Ethics In addition to numerous high international and domestic awards for her literary, cultural and humanitarian work, our respected writer Maja Herman Sekulić was recently appointed vice president of the new and unique Academy of Ethics. It was precisely the lack of ethical principles in contemporary culture and society that led to the idea of establishing this international institution in India under the auspices of the Indian Government and UNESCO.

This was achieved in cooperation with its founder and president, the Indian poet and thinker Dr. Jernail Anand, who is counted among the 10 most important Indian writers from Tagore to today, and who has recently been an honorary member of the Association of Writers of Serbia. The goal is to gather globally respected names from literature and culture around this Academy and to open a branch in Belgrade in the future.

DR MOLLY JOSEPH, CHIEF COORDINATOR, IAE, ADDRESSES STUDENTS ON ETHICS AND ECOLOGY

Dr Molly Joseph says: I was invited to address a batch of School students (Grade 8, 9 and 10) who were attending “Student Police Cadet Project – Summer Camp 2023” organised by the Police Department, Kerala. The four day session centred round relevant themes – Day 1. Save food and energy. Day 2. Save our Resources. Day 3. Smart spending, save energy, building a better future. Day 4. Breaking the Silence, saving lives, be the vocal.
Theme: ” I am strong mentally and physically”.

The sessions focused not merely on lecture method, but each was an interactive dialogue with the students.

My topic was Save our Resources and Save Green.

It was a sweltering noon when we started our conversation. What causes this extreme heat? Why nature is abused? I started with these questions
I referred to Chipko Movement ( Sundar Lal Bahuguna)
Green Belt Movement by Wangaru MathaiKenya) and told them about the stories of the movie :’Dreams’ by Akira Kurosova, Japanese film maker. In interaction session from them came the answers and solutions, to stop ruthless cutting down of trees, to stop polluting waters, start planting trees and stop covering up our yards with concrete tiles, not allowing water to filter in.

As emerging Police Cadets, they were of one voice saying it is their individual and collective duty to conscientise the society to save nature and our precious resources. They would start activitjes based on it in the school, like, forming Nature Club, Planting Trees, Work on Waste Disposal and clearing up the debris in the rivers and rivulets of our village.

Some were of the firm opinion that they had to conscientise the elders in the family first. The School Authorities were alert enough to do the follow up of these decisions taken offering all support.

I was thrilled by the fire of enthusiasm in their eyes as we sang together the Poem by the greatEnvironmentalist Poet Sugathakumari (late), the who wrote and fought for saving the green of nature. What better ethical spark I could ignite in these moulding
mind sets to work for a better world!
A Day well spent!
